Legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen passed away on Oct. 6, 2020, at age 65 due to throat cancer. His son, Wolfgang « Wolf » Van Halen, confirmed the news on Twitter, posting, « I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning. » Wolfgang added, « He was the best father I could ever ask for…My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss. I love you so much, Pop. »
Wolfgang’s mother and Eddie’s ex-wife, Valeri Bertinelli, shared her own tribute to Eddie via Instagram. The One Day at a Time actress wrote, « 40 years ago my life changed forever when I met you. You gave me the one true light in my life, our son, Wolfgang. » She continued, « Through all your challenging treatments for lung cancer, you kept your gorgeous spirit and that impish grin. I’m so grateful Wolfie and I were able to hold you in your last moments. I will see you in our next life my love, » Bertinelli concluded.
Bertinelli became Mrs. Van Helen in 1981, after dating for eight months. Ten years later, their son Wolfgang was born. The couple separated in 2001, officially divorcing in 2007. Then in 2009, Eddie married Janie Liszewski, with the two being together until the rocker’s death. Of course, Liszewski also posted a heartfelt post in Van Halen’s honor — here’s what she had to say.
